Vegetable & Flower Gardens

raised bed, in the ground or 1/2 barrels

To start or refurbish an existing garden here are some things to consider.

  • Do you already have soil?

    • NO

      • What you need is topsoil.  Our topsoil is amended soil that you can plant directly into.  It is never recommended to plant into a compost.

    • YES

      • Is the soil level low and does it need to be raised?

        • YES  You need to add a bit of topsoil to permanently raise the level.  You can work in a compost instead, but the level change will be temporary because the organic matter will continue to break down.  The exception to the rule is; if you have clay or sandy soil that desperately needs amending.  Use a compost this year to condition your soil.  Next year add some soil to raise the level.

        •

        • NO  If your level is not low and you want to boost the nutrients and quality of your existing clay, sandy or nutrient depleted soil you can use a compost.  We recommend 1 part compost to 2-4 parts soil.

When landscaping you still need to consider the items aforementioned with flower and vegetable gardens regarding soil level.  The same rules will apply whether you need soil or compost.  The difference is the products we have designed for landscaping use.

Pots & Containers

18 gallons & smaller

Planting in containers can be confusing.  What you need to consider is drainage.  Plants in containers 18 gallons and smaller need a faster draining mix, a potting soil.  Containers larger than 18 gallons need topsoil because potting soil will drain too fast.  For your small container needs we have three potting mixes, Value Nursery, Nursery Planter & Organic Nursery Planter.

Lawn

New Lawn

First things first.  Consider if you need soil or compost.  You must keep in mind that lawns need 4"-6" of good soil.  This doesn't always mean you have to buy new soil, you may just need to give yours a boost with compost for nutrients and aeration.

Nitro Loam, All Green Planter*

All Green Compost

*Note that All Green Planter Mix is rough in texture, although it has a perfect blend of fertilizers some customers prefer the finer texture of Nitro Loam for a seed lawn.  Nitro sawdust is available to thinly cover grass seed for water retention and protection from birds.

Existing Lawn

Even the most beautiful lawns need a boost once in a while.  Why not do it organically with Lawn Top Dressing.  We take a fully aged batch of Mango Mulch Compost and fine screen it.  Then we add 1/8- lava rock to improve drainage.  1/4- fir bark to adjust the pH and added nutrients of glacial rock powder, soft rock phosphate, greensand and oyster shell flour.  Sprinkle a thin layer on your lawn, rake it in, water and voila...green grass!

Water retention & Weed control

For water retention and weed control, mulching is what you need to do.  The nice thing about mulching is you can use almost anything.  All of our barks and ground covers will mulch for you.  Choose the mulch you find most attractive for your landscape or garden design.  Everyone's eye for color and texture is different, so we recommend you come by and look at our samples.  For added weed control check out our weed barrier in four different sizes.

Top Dressing

Much like mulching, top dressing has an added bonus, it will feed your soil as it helps retain water and control weeds for some time.  Note that weed control will only be temporary.

Rhodies & other acid lovers

Are you planning on planting plants such as Rhododendrons, Azaleas or Camellias?  These plants and many others have specific needs.  These are acid loving plants which means they don't like manure based products due to the high salt content in manure.  Our Rhododendron Mix is the perfect blend of nutrients to suit this need.
